A little history
The AC6000CW was a 6,000-horsepower (4,500 kW) diesel-electric locomotive design built between 1995 and 2001 by GE Transportation. At the outset, the locomotives suffered from various mechanical problems; the most severe issue being the engine itself. These problems caused GE to push back the full production of the new model until 1998. Most examples were purchased by either Union Pacific or CSX.
UP Ownership
From the information I can find it seems that UP received a total of 80 units of this model from GE in three batches as shown below:
- 10 units, numbered 7500-7509, were built between November 1995 and December 1996 (they were initially numbered 7000-7009. 7000 was the first AC600CW ever built)
- 45 units, numbered 7510-7554, were built between July and December 1998
- 25 units, numbered 7555-7579, were built in January 2001.
Readers should note that all these locomotives were converted to AC4460CW units and renumbered by UP in the 6888-6968 number range.
