My railway modelling era primarily focuses on the period from the early 1970s until the late 1980s. This is the same across my US, UK and Australian interests.

With my US projects, and a focus on small, practical and operations-focused layout design, my focus is on smaller rolling stock subjects as these overcome the limitation of smaller layouts (depth of field) while allowing you to run “long” trains of short cars. Among my favourite cars are the 40-foot Hi-Cube boxcars used mainly for double-stacking white goods. These cars were used in captive service between manufacturers and distribution points. While talking about boxcars I also have a fascination for the early Railbox cars. There are pages associated with both of these modelling subjects on this site.

With my Australian modelling, I am working on building a small fleet of 4-wheeled cars of the Victorian Railways in HO scale. Primarily these will be wheat cars (GY wagons), some box vans and other open cars for a future small exhibition layout. Once again these short cars fit in with my ethos of small, practical and operations-focused layout design. Smaller rollingstock allows you to do more in a smaller space.
